The town of Mainz

The university town of Mainz lies on the banks of the beautiful Rhine River. The town’s landmark, the 1000 year old cathedral already dominates the townscape from afar. The cozy historic downtown district has many enticing pubs and winding little streets which seem to invite you to go out and take a walk. Due to the numerous students, the city of Mainz is very lively and youthful. During the summertime there are a lot of festivities in and around Mainz and during the winter season the beautiful Christmas market in the town center continues to attract many visitors. And of course the city of Mainz is famous for its carnival, the so-called “Mainzer Fastnacht”.

The town was made famous by the printing press. The story of this important invention is documented in the Johannes Gutenberg museum. Even today the media still plays an important role in Mainz. The public television station ZDF continually broadcasts from its transmission center in Mainz. If you cross the Rhine River you get to the federal state of Hessen where the cities of Wiesbaden and Frankfurt am Main are located. The Rheingau area is in close proximity and very quickly you will find yourself in the countryside in the Rhine hessian vineyards where you are far away from the rush of the city. Mainz is incorporated in a pulsating urban area in which fans of culture, partying and nature all benefit from. So this is an ideal place to study and to enjoy your free time.
